John Davaine Bondi Tens Report

BONDI TENS – TOO GOOD FOR OUR OWN GOOD!

By John Davaine

With only an extremely modest preparation behind us, a somewhat eclectic pod of Whales meandered their way to Rose Bay on Friday afternoon to try their collective hand in the hurly burly of the 2010 Bondi Tens.

An early loss to Gregorians was not the promising start hoped for, although the ability of this group to quickly learn from their mistakes was to pay dividends later… Continue

Steve Williams Canadian Players

Hi All, I have two Canadian players Arriving in February to play a season with Mosman. They'll both be living with myself however I'm hoping we might be able to source some kind of work for them. Both of them have undergraduate business degrees and would be happy with anything from labouring to some general admin. Let me know if you have anyone that may be involved with recruitment agents or some direct contacts that we could get the lads sorted out with. Regards Steve Continue

John Davaine GRAND FINALS 2009

Whales Secure Third Premiership for 2009 By John Davaine Mosman Rugby added a third premiership to their 2009 bounty with the Whales Second Grade side defeating Beecroft Lions 17 – 6 at T G Milner Field last Saturday. Played on a disappointingly dusty surface in scorchingly hot conditions, Mosman's superior fitness and ability to inject quality “fresh legs” into the contest saw the Whales come from behind at half time to secure victory for the third successive match. On e… Continue

John Davaine Whales to Dominate Grand Final Day

Whales to Dominate Grand Final Day By John Davaine One would be forgiven for thinking that Mosman Rugby had abandoned their beloved Rawson Oval and relocated to T.G. Milner Field at Eastwood next Saturday. Such will be the predominance of the famous old two blues jerseys on Grand Final day, with the Whales striving to win premierships in four of the six grades being decided on the last Saturday of the season. With Colts and Second Grade already preparing for rematches age… Continue

John Davaine Finals Week One Report

Perfect Start to Finals for Whales By John Davaine With two premierships already secured this season, Mosman Rugby took great strides towards further success, with all four sides competing in this years finals series posting impressive victories in the first week of semi final competition, earning the club a finals “Whalewash”. Leading the way were Mosman's Colts and 2nd grade sides, both of whom won their major semi finals to claim Grand Final berths. Not to be outdone,… Continue

John Davaine R18 Report

Finals Focus for Whales By John Davaine Mosman Rugby completed their home and away season in swashbuckling style, securing semi final berths in 2nd, 4th & 5th grade and winning both the Halligan Cup (6th Grade) as well as the Minor Premiership in the Colts Barbour Cup competition. The all round strength of the Whales performance across the gamut of grades also gave Mosman their third consecutive 3rd place finish in the prestigious Club Championship. Despite First Grad… Continue

Alexander BRU Breen Club Captain's Corner - Round 18 vs Beecroft

Club Captain's Corner - Round 18 vs Beecroft As I write this report at the end of the regular Season 2009, I have to say how proud I am of what the club has achieved so far (and we haven't even got onto the finals yet)! It is a credit to all players, coaches, managers and of course the committee that we have been able to achieve such greatness for Mosman Rugby in 2009. Here's a snapshot of the on-field highlights so far this year: 3rd in Club Championship Finals for 2nd, 4th, 5th Grade and Col… Continue

Alexander BRU Breen Club Captain's Corner - Round 17 vs Forest

Such a promising start to the day at the Forest dustbowl ended rather dissapointingly with first and second grade succumbing to their Melwood hoodoo once again. That being said, I’d like to congratulate all the lower grades for their awesome efforts. Fifths showed that they are a force to be reckoned with this year in the Sutherland Cup winning 41-7. Fourths continued their strong form winning their 6th game in a row and are bulding momentum for the finals. Third grade produced the gutsiest win… Continue

John Davaine Round 17 Report

WHALES GET DUSTED UP By John Davaine Like watching a repeat of a B Grade horror movie, Mosman Rugby travelled to Melwood Oval for the second time this year and again, produced a completely uninspiring effort in succumbing 29 – 14 to Mid table Forest. Having had to trudge through a mud bath and battle monsoonal downpours earlier in the year, the Whales were this time faced with almost Saharan conditions. Blinding dust billowed constantly from the barren pitch, one seemingl… Continue

Alexander BRU Breen Club Captain's Corner - Round 16 vs Kings OBs

Sunny skies on Saturday saw the Whales on track to come away from St Luke’s Park with wins in all grades over Kings Old Boys, only to narrowly go down in 1st Grade with a cruel intercept try in the dying minutes of the game. This unfortunately robbed us for the second week in a row of another illustrious ‘Whalewash’, but didn’t change the fact that it was a very successful day for the Whales with victories in 5 out of 6 grades. Despite the disappointment of 1st Grade, it was super impressive to… Continue

John Davaine Round 16 Report. Mosman Vs Kings Old Boys

FINALS HOPES FINALLY DASHED By John Davaine Following a sterling late season revival that saw Mosman Rugby well positioned to make a last gasp all out assault towards a semi final berth, the Whales were unable to maintain their winning ways, going down 14-5 to a well drilled Kings Old Boys at Concord last Saturday. In a topsy turvy season, a brace of unpredicted results coupled with some fine victories from Mosman, saw the Whales within sight of grabbing a top four spot.… Continue

Alexander BRU Breen Club Captain's Corner - Round 15 vs Knox OBs

Congratulations to all players for the hard fought victories over Knox Old Boys in all senior grades last Saturday! Every game was tight and I think we will learn a lot from this day, and build confidence not just for the finals this year, but for many seasons to come. The exhilaration I felt when goose-turned-hero Beilby snatched ‘that intercept’ is a moment I won’t ever forget. Undoubtedly, the commitment and tenacity shown by all players in the club, in particularly 1st Grade, was simply sens… Continue

John Davaine Round 15 Report

WHALES SLAY LADDER LEADERS By John Davaine In what will go down as one of the all time classic matches, Mosman Rugby came from behind to snatch the unlikeliest of victories against Knox old Boys, stealing a 22-20 victory against the white hot premiership favourites at Rawson Oval last Saturday. Coming off a streak of five consecutive victories, Knox, the run away competition leaders, were heavy favourites to repeat the dominance they displayed over the Whales earlier in t… Continue

John Davaine U/85KG GRAND FINAL WRAP

“SLIM WHALES” REIGN SUPREME By John Davaine Mosman Rugby's Under 85 Kilo side proved themselves to be true Wednesday night warriors by claiming their second State Championship in this thrilling competition, defeating Lloyd McDermott 27-10 At Rawson Oval last Wednesday night. In an enthralling battle between two physical and highly skilled sides, both blessed with enormous pace to burn out wide, Mosman came back from a 10-7 half time deficit against the impressive Lloyd Mc… Continue

John Davaine ROUND 13 REPORT

WHALES RUE COSTLY LAPSES By John Davaine Mosman Rugby's senior coaches were left wondering exactly what might have been after their charges produced a classic Jekyll and Hyde performance in their 29-16 loss to a powerful St Patrick's at Balmoral Oval last Saturday. Dominant for the first 35 minutes of the first half and with a healthy, 9 – 0 lead to show for the efforts, the Whales fell asleep in the dying moments prior to the break, allowing St Patrick's to race over for… Continue

John Davaine WHALES CLEAN UP DIRTY REDS

WHALES CLEAN UP DIRTY REDS By John Davaine Proving that their amazing comeback win last week was no fluke, Mosman Rugby claimed the prize scalp of reigning triple premiers, Drummoyne, toppling the Dirty Reds 26-7 at Drummoyne Oval last Saturday. With no Mosman side suffering defeat against Drummoyne in the six matches played on the day, a jubilant Club Captain, Alex Breen, summed up the joyous mood of the Club at achieving this phenomenal result. “This is almost as good… Continue
