WHALES CLEAN UP DIRTY REDS
By John Davaine
Proving that their amazing comeback win last week was no fluke, Mosman Rugby claimed the prize scalp of reigning triple premiers, Drummoyne, toppling the Dirty Reds 26-7 at Drummoyne Oval last Saturday.
With no Mosman side suffering defeat against Drummoyne in the six matches played on the day, a jubilant Club Captain, Alex Breen, summed up the joyous mood of the Club at achieving this phenomenal result.
“This is almost as good as winning a Grand Final, as Drummoyne have been the benchmark in Kentwell Cup Rugby for many years now. To beat them on their home soil, with such a young side to complete the “Whale Wash” is as good a day as the Club has possibly ever experienced.” said Breen.
Club Coach , John Searl was more circumspect, stating that “We worked hard on our game plan for this match and did the simple things well.”
No doubt, the cornerstone of the Whales victory was it's resolute defence and it's determination not to be intimidated by the brutal Drummoyne pack. Whilst the massive Drummoyne pack placed enormous pressure on the Mosman scrum, the sheer tenacity of the Whales defence successfully shut down the dangerous Reds backline. None better than Flanker Pete Shirvington, Lock Trent Matchett and Centre Ben Warnes.
Playing with great élan, Mosman scored two long range second half tries via flying winger Tim Rist, who after also scoring a double in Reserve Grade and a hat trick in the U/ 85kgs match a few days earlier, finished with a staggering 7 tries for the week.
This gave the Whales a 17-5 lead but it was the poise and skill of fast improving Fly Half, Seb Beilby that sealed the match. Beilby's raking left boot ensured that the Whales closed out the match camped in Drummoyne's half with Beilby kicking three long range penalties to cap off Mosman finest victory of the season thus far.
The result sees Mosman presently in third position on the Club Championship and the Whales will take on St Patricks at Rawson on July 18 after enjoying a well deserved weeks break.
